What do you enjoy doing when you are not working?

When I’m not working, I enjoy any types of exercise, from running, to lifting weights, to yoga.  However, I love being in the kitchen, and nothing gets me more excited than an open evening to try a new recipe or idea.  When I don’t take over the kitchen, I like to spend time with my roommates, friends inside my fraternity, and my family.  We take weekend trips a few times a year, which can be as big of an event as skiing, to a quick weekend with no plans to see family in Chicago. Breaking up the routine with events like that are some of the things I look forward to most. However, when it comes back to routine, I love to end every day reading a few pages of a good book.

What is your background?

While I have spent almost my whole life in Lincoln, I was born in Littleton, Colorado and lived there the first few years of my life. In Lincoln, I lived most of my life right by east high school, with a neighborhood full of friends.  Any open night we would spend perfecting our backflips on the trampoline or playing basketball.  Though you would think I had enough basketball practice, I could never settle on a sport as a kid, and played just about everything up until high school, where I chose pole vault. That took over those 4 years, and I wouldn’t change it for anything. My job during high school up until BMG was working at Hillcrest Country Club. I did everything from running the snack bar to being a target for kids with nerf guns on Halloween!

My vault coaches, Coach Johnson and Scheulke, were two of the most impactful people during those times.  If I learned nothing from my actual vault training, I learned that no matter what the weather is, if its sunny and 70 in your head, then its sunny and 70.  The notion of being able to control your attitude will stick with me forever.  Except for the practice that it was 14 degrees and sleeting on us. That day was not sunny and 70.

In auditing, the concept of materiality is, simply, setting a threshold that anything under that threshold won’t materially misstate your financial statements. I try to apply this concept to my entire life – basically, don’t sweat the small stuff! In auditing, the concept of materiality is, simply, setting a threshold that anything under that threshold won’t materially misstate your financial statements.
